Abstract

Sheikh Khalid-i Jazarî, One of the Successors of Mawlana Khalid-i Baghdadi, and the Sufi Lodge in Basret

The lodge and madrasa established by Sheikh Khalid-i Jazarî (d.1839) who was one of the prominent caliphs/successors of Sheikh Mawlana Khalid-i Baghdadi (d. 1826), in the village of Basret Village on the mountain of Gabar around the 1820s made great contributions to the spread of Naqshbandi order in the South Eastern Anatolia. Basret Dervish Lodge has been one of the most important centers of Naqshbandi Order in this region like the lodges of Nehri, Tavila, Arvas and Norşin. Sheikh Salih-i Sıpki (d. 1852), Sıbgatullah Arvâsî (d. 1870) and Sheik Hamid-i Mardinî who is also known as Shah of Mardin, were received their education in Basret Dervish Lodge. In this article after shortly dealing with Sheikh Khâlid-i Jazarî’s life, we will present a short history of the Basret Lodge, its sheikhs, and try to give information about the branches separated from this lodge.
