Abstract

CRIMEAN SELİM BABA AND HIS SOFISTIC COMMENTS ON SOME VERSES OF THE QORAN

Abstract
There is no record about the place and date of birth of Selim Baba the Crimean who is a
sufi Turkish Crimean who lived in the XVIII century. The only thing we know about him is the fact
that he was a Crimean. We don’t have information either about his family, genealogy, marriage or
children. We found out that our author has exercised the profession of judge (also known as Kadi)
for his whole lifetime in Istanbul. While he was working as the judge of Bosnia he quit his job, and
first of all he was mentored by a person named Sheihk Muhammed Efendi. After the death of his
mentor, he completed his studies of law under the teaching of one of the judge (kadir) sheikhs in
Castonia and was brought to the Caliphate. Under the command of the sheihk, he took office
(started his work of showing the true path) first in Skopje and later in one of central disctricts of the
province of Thessaloniki called Veles and lived there until the end of his days.
Selim Baba, in two of the above mentionned books of his, commented some of the verses of
the Holy Qu’ran which discuss or give a particular attention to the commentaries of the sufis. He,
himself is linked to the faith community (congregation) known as the followers of sunnah and is a
famous erudite who understands the principle of unity of existence.
