Abstract


The first prominent figure known as a dervish who has found a religious organization in Turkish sufism history is Khoja Ahmad Yasawi. The poems of Yasawi, which are known as Hikmats and still has its unique influence on people for approximately nine centuries since his demise, have a crucial role in spiritual life of Turkish-speaking world in terms of its contribution on unity in faith among Turkish people. In Diwan-i Hikmat; the fundamentals and moral codes of Islam and basics of daily prayers are explained to ordinary people in a way that they can clearly understand. The spiritual values that are demonstrated by Yasawi in Hikmats have a considerable importance that they would act the most outstanding key instrument creating the spiritual unity of Turkish-speaking societies. Considering the advices in Divan-i Hikmat that may guide one's life on earth, his sayings are contiuning to shape the cultural life of Turks. The harmonious correspondence between the concepts in Diwan-i Hikmat and similar usages in verses of Quran is also an evidence to prove his high level of competence in understanding the Quran. Furthermore, it is possible to maintain an ethical approach based on spiritualism thanks to moral concepts providing by Yasawi in his book in detail.
