Abstract

In this study, the works, mystical views, branches, and postnishins of the Bâ Alawiyya order, which were established in the city of Terim in the Hadramaut region of Yemen in the 7th century, were examined. The founder of the order is Muhammed b Ali, known by the nicknames Fakîhu'l-Mukaddem and Ustazu'l-'Azam. The order has named as Bâ 'Alawiyya or Alewiyya after Alevi b Abdullah b Ahmed b Isa. basic teachings of the order are knowledge, deeds, vera', havf and sincerity. It has gained an independent identity with its own manners, methods and erkans. The order has revealed a new understanding that combines the Sunni Islamic methods of Shazeliyye and Imam Ghazali. One of the main features that distinguishes it from other sects is that its entire lineage is composed of Ahl al-Bayt. The sect, which has a history of about eight centuries, was divided into branches such as Âlu's-Sakkâf, Ayderûsiyya, Haddâdiyya, Attâsiyya and Bâ Fakîh. Many scholars, sufis, poets and thinkers were raised from these branches. The books they wrote on Islamic knowledge, especially in the field of Sufism, made a great contribution to the literature of Islamic thought. The sheikhs of the Bâ 'Alawiyya order belong to the Ash'ari school in terms of creed and the Shafi'i school of Islamic law. The followers of the order, who have a Sunni understanding of religion, have made great efforts for the spread of Islam. They succeeded to be influential in different parts of the world, especially in India, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and East Africa, and they enabled many people to meet the religion of Islam and also enabled the order to spread in those regions. Bâ Alawiyya continue their existence in many parts of the world, especially in Yemen, Saudi Arabia, East Africa, East Asia and Indian, with the madrasahs, zaviyes and ribat they established.
