The last sheikh of the Mýsri dervish lodge of Bursa, Þemsettin Ulusoy (d.1936) directed his inspiration towards a unique proposition by composing an urban history, instead of mourning over a tradition whose institutions were demolished.Þemsettin Efendi, establishing a safe place with his works' depicted a transformation of a collective mindset from the lodges to the culture of the city and its daily life, reading the necessities of the era precisely and turning it into a form. This research, based on his Ayine-i Diyâr-ý Þemsi which summarises his works about the city of Bursa, explains how he set the city as the ground for his ideas of progress, and how the city gained a new face in the context of interaction with its religious, social and political surroundings and its conservation and modernisation. In other words, this work aims to show how Þemsettin Efendi encompassed the city, not only with his devotion to the lodge but also with his understanding of existence. He summarised, in his own particular way, the city which is a manifestation of the civilisation it emanated from. Keywords
